In ongoing efforts to better serve the community, the Cherokee Tribune has announced that Emily Horos has joined the newspaper as sports editor.

Horos, a nine-year veteran of the newspaper industry, hopes to increase the level of local sports across all areas.

“I want to put the spotlight on what the athletes in Cherokee County accomplish every day,” Horos said. “I am already in the process of introducing myself to all the high school coaches and recreation program leaders, so we can work together.”

Prior to joining the Tribune staff, Horos worked at the Marietta Daily Journal — the Tribune’s sister paper — as a sports writer.

A 2003 graduate of Penn State with degrees in journalism and economics, she got her start in newspapers at the Easley (S.C.) Progress and went on to be a sports writer and later assistant editor at the Seneca Journal and Clemson Messenger, also in South Carolina. She has also worked at the Bradenton (Fla.) Herald as a page design editor.

Tribune managing editor Rebecca Johnston said she is pleased to have someone of Horos’ experience, and dedication to local sports, join the staff to head up sports.

“Our goal is to bring our readers the best in local sports coverage at all levels,” Johnston said. “Horos is a talented writer and a promising editor, and we know she is going to do an excellent job for the community and the newspaper.”

In addition to her time as a sports writer, Horos also established herself as a freelance photographer. Her past credits include The Associated Press, New York Times, Miami Herald and Newsday.

A former student-athlete in her native Pennsylvania, Horos understands the dedication it takes to succeed in a sport. She was a four-year letter-winner in both volleyball and basketball in high school.

She then walked on to the Penn State softball team for one season and helped start the university’s women’s inline hockey club team as well.

“I know how hard you have to work,” Horos said. “I’m going to work that hard to give the athletes the recognition they deserve.”

Saying that the sports department can only report on the things she knows about, Horos welcomes input from the community and encourages coaches and program leaders to submit information about their teams and activities.
