ATLANTA — The Etowah girls must love swimming at Georgia Tech.

They’ve finished in the top 10 every year since the state meet changed venues from the Westminster School to the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in 2011. This season, the Lady Eagles secured a seventh-place finish in the Class AAAAAA competition with 149 points.

Lambert ended up winning its first state title with 292 points. Peachtree Ridge (222), Lassiter (197), Johns Creek (185), Brookwood (170) and Kennesaw Mountain (167) followed in front of Etowah.

The Woodstock girls were 16th with 32 points.

“Our girls swam really well,” Etowah coach Virginia Richards said. “We were just up against teams with better swimmers in the finals. We all dropped our times. The relays dropped their times, and we’re pleased with all of our performances.”

Relays were huge for the Lady Eagles.

They took seventh in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3 minutes, 39.09 seconds. They were also eighth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.94). Their 200-yard medley relay won the consolation heat in a time of 1:50.85, good enough for ninth overall.

Individually, Taylor Weiss prospered in two events, taking third in the 100 butterfly (55.42) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:08.22). She had the early lead in the IM during the butterfly stroke — her best stroke — but she couldn’t maintain it once she got to the breaststroke, which she considers her weakest stroke.

“My breaststroke definitely needs some work,” Weiss said. “That did it for me.”

Megan Young fell just over a second shy of winning state in the 100 backstroke, taking second behind Milton’s Katie Grover in 56.41. She also took 12th in the 200 IM (2:11.17).

Diving also helped the Lady Eagles, with Madison Duvall third at 434.65 points.

“I think (the team) stepped in the right direction,” Weiss said. “I feel good about my two races and thought I swam very well.”

Lauren Oglesby contributed with a 10th-place showing in the 500 freestyle (5:07.03).

For the Woodstock girls, Lauren Case was fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:52.12) and 100 butterfly (55.46). The Lady Wolverines were sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:45.31).

For the Woodstock boys, who finished 26th overall with 14.5 points, Alarii Levrault-Lopez tied for seventh in the 100 butterfly (52.16) and was 14th in the 500 freestyle (4:43.97).

Class A-AAAAA

The Sequoyah girls were 14th overall in the Class A-AAAAA meet earlier Saturday, while the boys finished 41st.

Dalton clinched the boys title with 192 points, ahead of Westminster (173). Westminster won the girls meet with 306 points, while Woodward Academy and Marist tied for second with 239.

For the Sequoyah girls, Kristina Kosloski was fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.85) and took 12th in the 50 freestyle (24.86). Rachel Pelzek was 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.28) and 12th in the 100 freestyle (53.36).

Kosloski and Pelzek joined Mallory Knowles and Sophie Roy in helping the Lady Chiefs finish 10th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:44.26).

Jack Syers led the Sequoyah boys with an eighth-place showing in the 100 backstroke (54.92). He was 16th in the 100 freestyle (50.34).

Creekview’s Brittany Creasy was 13th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.57 and 14th in the 200 IM (2:13.12). Stone Peterson led the Creekview boys with a 14th-place finish in the 100 butterfly (54.36).

The Creekview girls ended up 36th, and the boys were 52nd.
