Lt. Jamie Gianfala, acting spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, said a deputy responded to a domestic standby call on the 300 block of Iron Hill Trace in Woodstock and escorted a woman to her residence to retrieve her belongings just after 2 p.m.
At about 2:30 p.m., the woman left the home and told the deputy the man inside had a gun, Gianfala said.
A SWAT team and negotiators arrived approximately 20 minutes later. They received no response from the man after repeated attempts to communicate via telephone and public address system.
Gianfala said after about an hour on scene, the SWAT team deployed a robot with a camera into the home.
“Via camera, we were able to see the deceased was sitting on the couch and what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” he said.
He said medics and SWAT team members entered the home to confirm the man was dead.
Gianfala said the case is being considered a suicide.
Deputies blocked entrance onto Iron Hill Trace throughout the ordeal and Georgia State Patrol assisted in securing the perimeter until after 6 p.m.
