Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground will be back in the spotlight in June when it hosts a U.S. Open sectional qualifier.

The course, which is listed as one of America’s top 100 golf courses by Golf Digest, has hosted four sectionals in the last seven years, most recently in 2011.This year the event will take place June 3.

Jennifer Oliff, an executive assistant at Hawks Ridge, said they consider it an honor to be in the qualifying rotation.

“We usually do it every other year,” she said.

In 2011, former Etowah standout and current Georgia Tech golfer Anders Albertson fell short in his bid to qualify at the course. Instead pro Ryan Nelson and two college golfers — Middle Tennessee State’s Brett Patterson and former Georgia golfer Russell Henley — advanced into the U.S. Open.

Golfers must advance from a local qualifier in order to reach the sectional — the final step before playing in the U.S. Open itself. The top three finishers at the sectional advance to the U.S. Open, with two alternates also selected.

The sectional is conducted over 36 holes, but Hawks Ridge officials said the course will still be open to members on the day of the qualifier.

The course is one of 11 qualifying sites ahead of June’s U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club Ardmore, Pa. Others are in California, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Qualifiers in Japan and England will be held May 27.
