SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The Savannah-Chatham County police chief says one of his officers and a murder suspect were both wounded in a shootout along Interstate 16.

Police Chief Willie Lovett disclosed the shootout Thursday afternoon, more than 20 hours after the violent chase resulted in a portion of I-16 to be closed for several hours Wednesday evening.

Lovett says 21-year-old Anthony Parrish stole a police car and fled when officers tried to arrest him Wednesday in connection with a shooting death at a house party last month.

The suspect fled onto I-16 but crashed off the side of the road. Lovett says Parrish got out of the car and shot one officer before police returned fire and shot him several times.

The chief says both are expected to recover.
