Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, said a gold Ford Explorer was headed northbound near the bridge at lower Bethany Road when it crashed shortly before 1 p.m.
“Emergency service personnel arrived on the scene minutes later to find a gold Ford Explorer SUV had left the roadway and struck a bridge pillar,” Cavender said.
The driver, Luca Garovi, 28, of Peoria, Ariz., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was originally believed to be from California because of his license and registration, but Garovi’s adopted mother, Kelley Mure, contacted authorities to correct the error after seeing media reports.
Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident. GSP spokesman Gordy Wright said alcohol is not suspected and that Garovi was not wearing a seatbelt.
Mure wrote in an email to local authorities Monday that her son is from Bern, Switzerland, and was working at the Swiss Embassy in Atlanta. She said his funeral services will be in Arizona.
