No injuries were reported in the fire, which destroyed the West Point Stephens Pepperell Mill in Opelika on Tuesday night.
There’s no word on the cause.
The mill closed in 2008, and fire officials tell the Opelika-Auburn News it’s been under demolition for more than a year.
Fire officials got word of the fire about 7:20 p.m. CDT.
Cathy Rowan and her husband live near the old mill. She and her husband heard an explosion before walking outside to see the building in flames.
An Opelika Fire Department spokesman says it’s unclear if the loud noise had anything to do with the fire.
