“I wanted to do a golf outing and an auction as a fundraiser for our program,” said Shaw. “I got together a golf committee and it just kind of evolved from there. We golf during the day and then do the rest in the evening.”
Shaw planned an event that began that not only featured a golf outing, but a food from local restaurants as well as a live auction. The event was a success — raising nearly $35,000 last year.
“It’s the biggest event that we do,” said Shaw. “What is nice about the event is that the kids benefit but they aren’t involved with going out and selling things. It’s our largest fundraiser of the year.”
The Warriors will once again be hosting the event at the BridgeMill Athletic Club in Canton on Thursday, April 25.
Registration for the golf tournament begins at 10 a.m. with a noon shotgun start. There will also be a hole-in-one car give-a-way, putting, long drive and closest to the pin contests. The cost of $150 per golfer for $500 for a four-person team includes a mulligan packet. Tee, green and hole marketing opportunities are also available.
Shaw expects to have the golf tournament filled within the next two or three weeks.
The second segment of the event will begin at 5 p.m. When guests can enjoy live music, complementary hors d’oeuvres as part of the Taste of Cherokee High School and secure on-site babysitting.
The Taste of Cherokee High School will feature the Painted Pig Tavern, Going coastal, Downtown Kitchen, Sixes Tavern, Zaxby’s, Sidelines, Featherstone’s, The Corner Butcher Shop and the Riverstone Corner Bistro.
At 6 p.m. a golf ball drop will be held. A helicopter will release number golf balls around a flag stick located outside the clubhouse. The ball that lands closest to the flag will be the winner. Anyone can participate. The cost is $10 per ball or $30 for three balls.
The auction will begin at 6:15 p.m. Some of the items up for auction include a Jackie Robinson autographed baseball, Delta Airline tickets, a salon package, rounds of golf at Crystal Falls in Dawsonville, a vet exam and hotel stays.
“To be honest with you, you fill the golf tournament up and you only make a limited amount on that,” said Shaw. “Where we make most of our money is in the evening event and the auction afterward.”
The money that is raised goes to equipment such as shoulder pads and helmets, facility upgrades, such as the wind screen that was added to the stadium last year.
“It goes into our football booster club and then we spend it on our player equipment needs or facilities needs, whether it is replacing something or purchasing something new.”
