Reinhardt’s football team took another step toward its inaugural season with the opening of spring practice this past week.

The Eagles’ roster has also been released, featuring 11 players who were members of Cherokee County high school teams. Most of the team hails from Georgia — with fewer than 10 from out of state.

Among the local players are Cherokee’s Dylan Haynes, Creekview’s Austin Chester, Etowah’s Damola Awe-Olaleye and Vashaun Washington, Sequoyah’s Coleman VanDyke and Woodstock’s Trevor Bagwell, James Busby, Jake Ingram, Nick Leeper, Shane McCleskey and Chas Pierce.

Leeper and McCleskey came by way of Faulkner and Murray State, respectively. Bagwell previously attended Valdosta State.

Haynes is one of three quarterbacks listed on Reinhardt’s roster. A 2011 graduate of Cherokee, he broke the team record for total yards in a game — previously held by Jayson Foster — during his final appearance with the Warriors.

Reinhardt put the pads on for the first time Wednesday. According to the athletic department’s training schedule, the players are working in pads in the mornings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for review film. Reinhardt will also hold several Saturday workouts before wrapping up the spring.

Reinhardt will practice through mid-April and will likely hold an intra-squad scrimmage to wrap things up before summer and the Eagles’ inaugural game Aug. 31 at Mercer.
