ATLANTA — Anna Dunn seems to be hitting her stride after a cold start to the season.

The Creekview senior prevailed in the pole vault at the two-day Coaches Invitational, clearing 11 feet on Friday at Georgia Tech’s Griffin Stadium.

She said a victory is a big step in the right direction.

“I’ve had a slow season, because it’s been cold and windy, and thankfully (Friday) was really good weather and I can get back on my biggest pole,” said Dunn, who is hoping to walk on at Georgia next season. “I’ve been kind of upset this season because I haven’t been jumping well at all.”

Dunn, who finished second in the pole vault at the Class AAAA state meet last year, finished ahead of Kennesaw Mountain’s Jordan Shealy. Shealy also cleared 11 feet, but Dunn won a tiebreaker based on fewer missed attempts.

Dunn also competed in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing sixth overall in 15.74 seconds.

Creekview teammate Camille Fahrnbauer finished in a three-way tie for fourth in the high jump (5-0). Mary Kellan Carr was in a three-way tie for eighth in the shot put (33-8½) and finished 14th in the discus (89-9).

“The girls are doing well, and we have seniors (Dunn and Carr) who will probably be going to state,” Creekview coach Nathan Cline said. “We’ve got talent spread throughout the events.”

The Creekview boys have been fighting injuries this season and didn’t have a finisher in the top 10.

Etowah didn’t come away with a champion on either team, but the Eagles did have some solid performances, particularly at the distance relays, where there are no seniors.

“We’re young,” Etowah coach Brett Vavra said. “We have mostly freshmen, sophomores and a junior here or there. The distance is the strength of our program. Coach (Joe) Robinson runs a phenomenal distance program.”

The Lady Eagles took third in the 3,200 relay (9:59.04), while the boys placed sixth (8:25.32). The Etowah girls also set a school record in the 6,400 relay (22:31.16), good enough for eighth place, and the boys were 12th (19:02.76).

The Etowah girls also had a solid meet in the jumps and throws.

Leena Morris took second in the shot put (39 ½) and placed third in the discus (110-0). Allison Guebert took in third the high jump (5-2).
