A 20-year-old has been arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run after hitting a crossing guard Tuesday in front of Liberty Elementary School.

Victor Baruchman, 20, of Woodstock, told investigators with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office he was on his way to drug court graduation when the incident occurred, Sheriff Roger Garrison said.

Baruchman is charged with felony hit-and-run and is in custody at Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. His bond is set at $15,000, according to Lt. Jay Baker, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office.

Garrison said detectives received a tip Tuesday night regarding Baruchman’s place of work and went there to speak with him.

“Through a series of interviews, he began to cooperate and admitted to driving the vehicle and told them where the car was,” Garrison said.

Garrison said the suspect told investigators he went around the traffic in front of the school Tuesday morning, struck the guard and kept going. He added he was running late for his drug court graduation, Garrison said.

Around 12 p.m. Wednesday, detectives were seen interviewing Baruchman’s father in the Deer Run neighborhood in Towne Lake on the 800 block of Ridge Valley. Baruchman’s car, which was visible from the roadway, had its front bumper removed.

In an initial statement after the hit-and-run, Baker said the car had a University of Tennessee “T” sticker on the rear window.

“When detectives discovered Baruchman’s 2000 two-door Honda Accord, the ‘T’ had been scraped off the back window and the front bumper of the vehicle had been removed,” Baker said in a Wednesday afternoon release.

The 63-year-old crossing guard, Jerrold Read, was released Wednesday from Northside Hospital-Cherokee after sustaining a broken ankle, Baker said.
