Transitioning from Lent to Easter, local churches across Cherokee County will hold services for Holy Week to commemorate the resurrection of Christ.

First Baptist Church of Woodstock

The First Baptist Church of Woodstock has many events planned for this year’s Easter season.

On Maundy Thursday, March 28, the church will have its words-from-the-cross sermon “The last 7 words of Jesus” at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel.

The following day, a secret church simulcast will be at 7 p.m. in the chapel.

On Saturday, March 30, a choir and orchestra will perform to complement the 3 p.m. service in the worship center and the 5 p.m. service in the chapel.

For Easter Sunday, the church will also have two worship services, with the first being simulcast at 9 a.m. in the worship center and chapel and the second service at 11 a.m. in the chapel.

A 1:30 p.m. service will also be given in Spanish.

The church will provide childcare for the worship services on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The resurrection of Christ after his death is why we celebrate Easter on Sunday,” said church spokeswoman Linda Holland.

The church’s common goal is “to tell as many people as possible about Jesus Christ and the new life that can be experienced through knowing him.”

First United Methodist Church

Pastor Ed Towers wants the focus of his church’s Easter services to celebrate Christ’s resurrection.

“Our service recognizes when the women went to the tomb of Jesus and found out he wasn’t there,” he says.

The pastor hopes to pass on to his congregation the church’s intent with Easter.

“Easter Sunday is a celebration,” he said. “Jesus was raised from the dead, and he is alive. He died to pay for our sins, and we are celebrating his resurrection and the fact that he lives with us now.”
