Having been contained by the Yellow Jackets’ McKenzie Mills, the Grizzlies (8-5, 7-1 Region 7AAAAA) finally got on the board in the sixth inning, with a 4-0 deficit, when Mills lost control.
Steven Whitaker, Chandler Wold and Chase Puckett walked to lead off the inning before a passed ball forced Whitaker home. After Wold scored on a groundout, Mills drew another out and Nick Williams came to the plate for Creekview with two outs.
Williams connected on the pitch he saw from Mills and homered to left field, scoring he and Puckett to tie the game at 4-all.
After a scoreless seventh for both teams, the game went into the eighth, in which Kyle Wilkie reached on a one-out single and stole second. Wilkie, however, was thrown out trying to score on Max Holton’s single, though Holton advanced to second on the throw.
Pinch-hitter Ryan Stevens came up as the next better and singled to right to score Holton with the game-winning run.
Wilkie and Holton each had two runs on the day.
Creekview reliever Adam Nun had the kind of game Mills had for Sprayberry earlier in the night. Nun pitched three scoreless innings, not allowing a hit to the Yellow Jackets.
Creekview, alone atop the region standings, will host North Springs on Monday.
Cherokee 11, Wheeler 0 (5 inn.): The Warriors jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to doubles by Austin Pharr, Mason Ward and Macen Bailey.
Leading 9-0 in the fifth frame, Cherokee put the game away when Ben Banas and Alex Murfin both reached on walks and advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Pharr batted them both home with a single to right, ending the contest.
Eli Dickens pitched all five innings, recording six strikeouts.
Cherokee (5-7, 1-0 Region 5AAAAAA) will play at Lassiter on Monday.
