Creekview, which started the season 3-4, beat Riverwood in its Region 7AAAAA finale Tuesday, giving the team an 8-5 record overall, with a 6-4 mark in the region.
Kristina Baublitz is in her first season with the girls. She previously worked with the boys team and said the transition has gone better than expected.
“I’m absolutely pleased,” she said. “We started off slow, but we have come along. The girls work hard, and they listen.”
Baublitz attributed the team’s increased success to the progress made by some of the younger players.
“They really formed into some outstanding players along the way,” Baublitz said. “It’s exciting. The younger players have really come through.”
Emily Fraysier has solidified herself at No. 1 singles, with Lauren Pero and Olivia Rowland filling out the singles slots. Hannah Rowland and Sloan Anderson pair up at No. 1 doubles, while Keri Fowler and Alexis Pache play at No. 2.
“The freshmen have really shown up for the seniors, and that is an exciting thing as a coach,” Baublitz said.
Looking toward the region tournament, Creekview knows the battle will be tough. In addition to county rival Sequoyah, Cambridge and Northview field tough teams.
“It will be difficult, but we will show up and give it our best,” Baublitz said. “We have got our work cut out for us, but I think we are going to rise to the challenge. I know we will.”
Baublitz said that, while the girls are maturing as players, not many have experience under pressure. It’s a particular concern when it comes to the freshmen.
“These girls haven’t played with this much on the line before,” Baublitz said.
Still, Baublitz, who played tennis in high school, said she already views the season as a success after making the transition from coaching the boys team.
“The girls have given me everything they have,” said Baublitz, whose team will close the regular season by hosting River Ridge on Wednesday. “I thought it would be tough at the beginning of the season, and it can be when you get a new coach, but it was like no switch at all. They just showed up and went to work for me and listened to everything I said. That is a success in itself and has led us to where we are.”
