CANTON — While most were tricked this April Fools’ Day with phony headlines or workplace pranks, Chuck Flagg instead showed Canton residents that there really is such a thing as a free lunch.

Flagg, owner of The Flagg Agency/Cruise Holidays, decided to pay it forward this April Fools’ Day by paying for drive-thru lunches at the Chick-fil-A at Canton Marketplace.

As lunch-goers drove up to pay at the window after being greeted by the signature Chick-fil-A Cow mascot, they were met with a surprise paid-for meal.

The Macedonia resident and board member of the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce said 73 guests were served from noon to 1 p.m.

“I saw on the (Chick-fil-A) Facebook page where people have paid for the person behind them, a sort of random act of kindness,” Flagg said. “So I said, let’s do it for an hour.”

Flagg said most were shocked and very grateful.

“A lot of people said, ‘I wish I’d ordered more!’’’ Flagg said. “A lot of people looked at us with trepidation and wanted to know, what’s the catch? But this was just paying it forward.”

He said it was a part of an effort to show residents that there are still “living, breathing” travel agents out there.

“Sure there are travel websites, but you don’t know who’s making those reviews,” Flagg said.

All of the drive-thru patrons received a card allowing them to enter online to win a $100 gift card from Chick-fil-A. The drawing will be Friday.
