A $7.9 million road project that has tied up traffic at the intersection of Sixes Road and Interstate 575 for years is finally close to completion.

The Sixes Road project by the Georgia Department of Transportation, which began in June 2011, was expected to be completed late Wednesday afternoon.

The core of the project was to revamp the I-575/Sixes Road Interchange and included the construction of a bridge and its approaches on Sixes Road over I-575.

The work on improved entrance and exit ramps occurred concurrent to the bridge enhancements.

Project manager Tim Griffin, a consultant overseeing the project for GDOT, said only a few punch list items remain and he anticipates all work to be finished in a few weeks.

“The paving will be done today,” Griffin said Wednesday. “We still have final striping, concrete islands and dressing along the shoulders, what we call punchlist items, to complete.”

The work left to be done will not disrupt traffic the way recent paving of the ramps, bridge and approaches has in recent months, GDOT officials said.

“The good news is that the completion of the pavement will render the project complete as far as the traveling public is concerned,” said Mohamad Arafa, spokesperson for DOT. “The remaining work will minimally interfere with traffic.”

The project also included the installation of intersection video detection systems.

“The video system helps DOT monitor the intersection so we can respond quickly if there is a problem,” Arafat said.

Griffin, who came onto the project last August, said that the concrete islands will be constructed on the southbound on and off ramps, and should interrupt traffic very little.

“Right now what is down is the temporary striping; we wll put down thermal plastic which will be visible at night, probably sometime next week,” Griffin said. “I am going to be an optimist and say maybe everything will be completed next month.”

Marietta-based C.W. Matthews was awarded construction of the project by GDOT and officials said they are completing the work for the budgeted $7.9 million. Eighty percent of the money was funded through federal dollars and 20 percent was be funded by the state.

The bridge will have two through lanes in each direction, two left-turn lanes onto the southbound lanes of I-575, a left turn lane onto I-575 north, a raised median and sidewalks on each side.

The northbound exit ramp off 575 was widened to two lanes, with a total of four lanes at its junction with Sixes Road to allow for two left and right turn lanes.

The southbound exit ramp will be a single lane ramp with two lanes at its ending with Sixes Road, which would allow for both left and right turns onto Sixes Road. The northbound entrance ramp will have one lane and the southbound entrance ramp will have two lanes, which would allow for two left-hand turns from Sixes Road onto the interstate.
