CANTON — The number of business licenses issued in Cherokee County for the month of March are on a slow rise from those in February, but they’re still way down when compared to March 2012.

March 2013 saw the addition of 125 new businesses to Cherokee County. The same month in 2012, however, welcomed 208. In February of this year, 110 licenses were doled out.

In spite of the slow growth last month, though, Steve Holcomb, president of United Community Bank in Canton, said things could be a lot worse in the slow-mending economy.

“I would not be alarmed at all at this point by a flat trend there,” he said. “Right now, the trends we’re seeing, they are slow recovery trends, but they’re recovery trends.”

And March in general, Holcomb said, can be a month of a lull in business around the country.

One company testing their luck in the still-cloudy business climate in Cherokee County is an automotive exhaust repair shop in Canton.

But Cherokee Muffler and Auto Repair isn’t exactly new to Canton, or even to its location on Reinhardt College Parkway.

The shop first opened its doors in 1987 when David Easley and one of his sons started the Easley family’s work under the name that would eventually lead to another location in Jasper, said another of Easley’s sons, Brenton Easley, who now owns the shop with his wife Angie.

Brenton learned his trade from his father and took over operations in 1996, and the doors stayed open until 2010 when it was not economic troubles but his and Angie’s desire to work closer to home, he said.

They shut down their location in Canton and moved their efforts to the Jasper location, hoping to rent out the Canton shop to another company.

And they did, Brenton said, but soon the down-trending economy caught up with them when their tenants couldn’t pay the rent and had to move out.

After the tenant closed up, the Easleys decided to come back to Canton and re-open their original shop, still keeping their new location in Jasper open, Brenton said.

Since opening back up in early March, Brenton said, business has been good, or at least good enough to keep him, the shop’s lone employee, busy.

Now he said he has about five different jobs per day.

“It’s good,” he said, “but it could be better. It used to be about 30 or 40 jobs a day (when the shop was open before).”

Brenton said he attributes the economy and being out of the area for more than two years to the low numbers, but he hopes soon things will pick up enough to hire on a few more employees and get his shop back to four employees as it was before it shut down in 2010.

Until then, Brenton said, it’s just him and his now retired father who stops in to lend a hand in between rides on his Harley Davidson.
