CANTON—A Canton woman who was once the treasurer for a local PTA and soccer booster club was arrested Monday and charged in the theft of more than $18,000 from the two organizations, according to the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.

Kim Turman, 40, was the treasurer of the Indian Knoll Elementary School PTA for two years and the Sequoyah High School Girls Soccer Booster Club for one year, Lt. Jay Baker, public information officer for the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Turman is accused of stealing about $12,500 from the PTA in 2011 and 2012 and about $5,900 from the booster club in 2012, Baker said in a release Tuesday.

The financial issues within the PTA and booster club do not involve “Cherokee County School District funds or employees,” Barbara Jacoby, spokesperson for the Cherokee County School District said in a release Tuesday.

“Whenever PTA or booster club leaders determine a local unit’s financial records need to be audited,” Jacoby said, “the school district offers assistance.”

In this case, “the Georgia PTA conducted the audit for the Indian Knoll PTA, and the booster club recruited a retired CPA to conduct its audit,” Jacoby said.

Turman is charged with two counts of felony theft by taking, Baker said.

She was arrested Monday afternoon by sheriff’s deputies and was released on a $52,000 bond Monday night, Baker said.
