Wednesday night's heavy round of rains washed out a portion of Stoney Creek Road in Cherokee County. It left residents in about 30 homes stranded inside of their Hickory Glenn Subdivision without access to the main road.

Local authorities say that while the roadway in the 600 block of Stoney Creek Road is still intact, the ground under the road had been washed away. The road is currently closed off to traffic, while crews determine a place to build a temporary road to allow the Hickory Glenn residents to safely exit the subdivision.

There appeared to be quite a bit of erosion underneath and beside the affected portion of the road. The sidewalk on one side of the road had completely collapsed.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office, Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services and Cherokee County Roads and Bridges are on scene.
