Police say they found a Canton man burglarizing a local thrift store late Thursday under the cover of darkness left after the storms had just ripped through the city.

Eddie Lee Payne, 55, was arrested on charges of burglary just before midnight, when a Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputy found him inside a thrift store on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton, said Lt. Jay Baker, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

Baker said Deputy Mark Patterson was on patrol following the storms Thursday night when “despite the darkness due to the power outage,” he saw a car parked next to the business and suspected someone was inside.

Patterson then went in the business and found Payne, who tried to flee on foot, Baker said.

More deputies arrived and caught Payne as he ran from the back door.

“Payne admitted he was there to commit a theft,” Baker said.

Payne is charged with burglary, possession of tools to commit a crime and criminal trespassing. He is in the Cherokee County Jail on a $23,000 bond.
