I am a sophomore at Woodstock High School. I have been attending Cherokee School District schools for the past 10 years. I have always been a straight A student in the accelerated program thanks to hard work, excellent teachers and a system that genuinely cares about the welfare of its students.
My father’s employer transferred him and it was because of CCSD’s excellent reputation that my family chose to settle in BridgeMill.
For the past six months, I have witnessed the changing atmosphere of the school board due to (School Board Member Kelly) Marlow’s actions. Ms. Marlow was elected to better the county’s education system, but she is not upholding this responsibility.
She represents the taxpayers in this county, but as a member of the school board, she should be my voice and that of the other students as well. She wastes valuable board time with petty arguments and the reopening of issues that have been previously decided.
She wrote a formal complaint to the SACS committee. SACS examined our schools about a year and half ago and found no issues. I am not sure why Ms. Marlow feels that the effectiveness of the board could have declined so rapidly. The only change in the makeup is the addition of two new board members, one whom I admire.
At Ms. Marlow’s town hall meeting she stated, “If SACS comes in and puts the board on probation, it will not affect the schools, that only the board would be penalized.” This is false, because the newspapers debunked this information.
I am appalled that she is jeopardizing my future and that of other students. I am also concerned that she has been arrested and is facing felony charges. As an elected official, I expect Ms. Marlow to be a role model.
She does have the opportunity to do the right thing. I ask her to resign, so that the focus can be on improving the education of our students. I am not old enough to vote, but I will be by the next election and I will not forget Ms. Marlow’s actions and the adverse effect they have had on the functioning of our school system.
