Cherokee County native Riley Davenport has spent plenty of time on the golf course this summer, but he isn’t looking to slow down any time soon.

The former Sequoyah standout who is now playing collegiately at Charlotte, will tee off in the Southern Amateur Championship today, beginning the four-round tournament at the Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas.

For the first time, the Southern Amateur is open to players worldwide. Previously, it was limited to residents of the 14 states that are a part of the Southern Golf Association.

The majority of the field, including Davenport, had to advance from a qualifying tournament, with only a limited number of exemptions awarded. Davenport made it in as an alternate, after failing to earn one of the four berths from a June 18 qualifier at Rivermont Country Club in Johns Creek.

The Southern Amateur consists of 72 holes of stroke play. After two rounds, the field of 156 will be reduced to the low 66 and ties.

This past season, his freshman campaign at Charlotte, Davenport had limited playing time, seeing just one fall event and three in the spring. He did win Atlantic 10 Conference rookie of the week honors in February after tying for 31st at the Bayou City Collegiate Championships.

This summer, Davenport’s schedule has included a U.S. Open local qualifier in Kennesaw and the Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta, among other events.

Davenport will tee off today on the back nine at 12:30 p.m. He is paired with Keagan Cummings, a member of the North Carolina golf team, and Brian Noonan, a former LSU golfer.

Others in the field include Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans, Alabama’s Trey Mullinax and Cory Whisett and defending champion Peter Williamson.

Past champions of the Southern Amateur — first held in 1902 — include amateur golf legend Bobby Jones and such future PGA Tour mainstays as Ben Crenshaw, Bob Tway, Justin Leonard, Webb Simpson.
