Schools gear up for first day of classes

Cherokee County’s 41 district schools are getting ready for the first day of school Aug. 5, and most walkthrough events are planned to take place between Tuesday and Friday in preparation for the new school year.

The school district expects a total enrollment of 39,324 student for the upcoming year, and is the largest employer in Cherokee County with 4,439 employees, according to a fact sheet from the district.

School buses are also gearing up and school officials said buses are expected to transport about 23,000 students every morning and 26,000 students every afternoon.

The district’s 350 buses are expected to transport about 70 percent of the student population. Bus route information is available online at portal.cherokee.

Schools’ front offices re-opened July 23, and registration can be completed between 8 a.m. and noon.

All Cherokee County elementary schools will have pre-planning walkthrough events Thursday, and Avery and Carmel elementary schools also have walkthroughs scheduled for Wednesday.

Middle school walkthrough events are planned for Thursday and Friday, and high school walkthroughs are scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Preschools will have walkthroughs Thursday and Friday, and other educational centers have walk-throughs planned for Tuesday and Wednesday and for Aug. 7.
