CANTON — Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney Shannon Wallace and members of her staff have been awarded for their efforts to prevent child deaths in Cherokee County.

Wallace and staff, who serve on the Cherokee County Child Fatality Review Team, were selected to receive the 2012 Prevention Team of the Year honor at the PAC Annual Summer Conference on July 24, said Chief Assistant District Attorney Rachelle Carnesale.

“It’s a big deal to be the prevention team of the year,” Carnesale said. “It’s a nice honor for the county.”

Carnesale said the team was chosen for the award by the Georgia Child Fatality Review Panel thanks to its “dedicated efforts” to prevent child fatalities and child abuse in Cherokee County.

Wallace, who chairs the team, said she was pleased with the work of her staff in keeping the county’s children from ending up as statistics.

“I am proud of the collaborative spirit shown by this team,” Wallace said. “Because of the commitment of these professionals, we have been able to identify threats to the safety of our children and to attack these threats as a united force for prevention.”

Wallace said the members of her team devote “a tremendous amount time and energy to providing community and countywide agency education,” which can stop the crimes before they happen.

The Cherokee County Child Fatality Review Team is made up of the Child Fatality Review Committee and the Child Abuse Protocol Committee, Carnesale said. These groups work together for their common cause of prevention through spreading awareness, inter-agency training, investigation and prosecuting cases of crimes against children.

“This is the second time the Cherokee County Child Fatality Review Committee has been recognized for its outstanding service to our community,” Carnesale said. “In 2007, this team was recognized as the Child Fatality Review Panel of the Year.”

Wallace said Cherokee County is fortunate to have the decorated team focusing on children’s issues
