Firefighters battled a structure fire Wednesday afternoon at 627 Wilkie Trail in northeastern Cherokee County, but were able to get the blaze under control quickly.

The Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the report of the fire at about 1 p.m., said Tim Cavender, spokesman for the agency.

“Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the one-story structure,” Cavender said.

They were able to get the fire out quickly before any major damage occurred on the structure, he said.

“The house, however, did receive some fire, smoke and water damage,” Cavender said.

The man who lived at the home was not there at the time of the fire, Cavender said.

A Cherokee County firefighter twisted his back while working the fire, but was evaluated and treated on scene.

No other injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation, Cavender said.
