In what has become a competitive way to kick off the volleyball season, all six of Cherokee County’s teams will hit the courts for the two-day Sequoyah Classic.

Sequoyah, Etowah, River Ridge and Creekview will all host a portion of the event, which begins today with pool play at 5 p.m. The eight pools, consisting of four teams each, will play a series of matches this evening and continue Saturday morning.

At that point, teams can either advance to the silver or gold bracket. The semifinal and final matches for the gold bracket will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Sequoyah, while the silver semifinal and championship rounds will take place at Creekview, beginning at 6 p.m.

Sequoyah will play its first match today at 5 p.m., when it hosts Northside-Columbus in Pool A. Also in that pool are Houston County and Whitewater.

Also playing at Sequoyah is Pool B, which features Woodstock, Oconee County, Northgate and Newnan. The Lady Wolverines will play Newnan at 6 p.m. tonight, and Northgate at 8 p.m.

Etowah will host matches for Pool C and Pool D. The Lady Eagles will go up against Kennesaw Mountain, Sprayberry and East Coweta in Pool C, with their first match at 6 p.m. against East Coweta.

Cherokee will be the only local representative in Pool D. The Lady Warriors have a tough bracket, which features Pope and Alpharetta, as well as Apalachee. Cherokee will also open play at 6 p.m. against Apalachee.

River Ridge, which is in Pool E, will also host Pool F. The Lady Knights will face Roswell, Hillgrove and Flowery Branch. Their first match is at 6 p.m. against Flowery Branch.

Pool F features Lassiter, Kell, Lambert and Dunwoody.

Creekview will be the site for Pool G and Pool H.

Mount Vernon Presbyterian, South Forsyth, Rockdale County and Milton will make up Pool G.

The Lady Grizzlies are a part of Pool H, along with Marietta, Sonoraville and Starr’s Mill. Creekview also plays its first match at 6 p.m., when it faces Starr’s Mill.

Last season, Creekview, Sequoyah and Etowah reached the gold bracket, which consists of the top two teams from each pool. Woodstock and Cherokee settled for the silver bracket, and River Ridge did not participate.
