CANTON — Police say charges are unlikely in the death of a Cherokee County man found shot to death in a Pickens County home Sunday because the shooter is believed to have been defending himself.

Capt. Frank Reynolds of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that police will likely not file charges against Alex Rebo in the death of Anthony Scott Terrell, 44, of Canton, because the shooting at Rebo’s home in Jasper on Sunday morning is believed to have been in self-defense.

“Based on statements and physical evidence, it doesn’t appear at this point that it could be anything but self-defense,” Reynolds said. “There’s no indication to say otherwise.”

Terrell was found dead at Rebo’s home on Waleska Highway just after midnight Sunday by Pickens County Sheriff’s deputies, who then began an investigation in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation into the death.

After several days of gathering information in the case, Reynolds said investigators believe that Rebo shot Terrell during an argument the men had after going out to dinner along with Terrell’s wife.

Over the course of the argument, Reynolds said Rebo asked Terrell to leave his home.

Terrell and his wife did leave, but came back.

Reynolds said Rebo warned Terrell again to stay out of the house, but the 44-year-old kept coming.

By then, Rebo had retrieved a hunting rifle to defend himself, Reynolds said.

Reynolds said Terrell continued threatening Rebo and suddenly charged toward him.

Rebo then fired a single, fatal shot into the 44-year-old’s chest, Reynolds said.
