While Cherokee County’s lakes and waterways were quiet over the last holiday of summer, neighboring Bartow County reported one drowning at Lake Allatoona.

A 23-year-old Atlanta man died Sunday after jumping off a boat in Lake Allatoona and going underwater, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division.

Nicholas Alexander was with family on a rental boat near the Red Top Mountain State Park swim beach when he jumped off the boat about 75 feet from shore at about 5 p.m., according to GDNR spokesman Rick Lavender.

The GDNR reported that two people tried unsuccessfully to reach him from shore after he began to struggle and went underwater.

Alexander’s body was recovered at 6:18 p.m. Sunday in about 30 feet of water, according to the GDNR.
