Naked burglar gets trapped in Milwaukee air vent

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee police say a naked burglar tried to break into a veterinary clinic to steal drugs but got stuck in the air vents for almost 12 hours.

Police Lt. Mark Stanmeyer says employees of the Small Animal Hospital in Milwaukee came into work Monday morning and heard the muffled screams of someone calling for help. They discovered the 19-year-old stuck in a narrow shaft.

The teen had crawled into the vent Sunday about 9 p.m., meaning he spent about half a day in the vent.

Stanmeyer says the teen suffered multiple cuts and scrapes from screws.

Police Capt. Aaron Raap says the man had stripped naked on the roof before breaking into the vent, perhaps to prevent his clothes from snagging on screws.

The man faces an attempted-burglary charge.

Young moose hangs around Entiat for 2 weeks

ENTIAT, Wash. (AP) — Leave the moose alone. That's the advice the state Fish and Wildlife Department is giving to residents of Entiat.

The Wenatchee World reports a young moose has been hanging out around town for two weeks and resting on lawns.

Wildlife Sgt. Dan Klump says cooler weather usually triggers moose to move on and agents are hoping this one soon travels up the Entiat Valley.

If there's a confrontation with humans, agents would have to tranquilize the moose and relocate it — a major operation that's traumatic for the animal.

Clean Port Townsend beach, get free beer

PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Help clean a beach, get a free beer.

That's the deal for volunteers Saturday at the Pourhouse craft beer taproom in Port Townsend.

The Peninsula Daily News reports volunteers have to register with the Marine Science Center in the parking lot. They'll be assigned to a beach and asked to record what kind of trash is collected. The information will be compiled as part of the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day.

Volunteers who bring the trash and information back to the Pourhouse will get one free beer.

Mystery maple aroma wafts over NYC, NJ

NEW YORK (AP) — A mystery aroma that's being compared to maple syrup has been wafting over parts of New York City and New Jersey.

Fox New York said Wednesday that the odor was evident in Queens and from Manhattan's Upper East Side to the City Hall area.

In February 2009, investigators traced a syrupy smell to a New Jersey facility that processed fenugreek seeds. Fenugreek is a common ingredient in curry powders. The extract is also used in artificial vanilla, caramel, butterscotch and maple flavorings.

It was reported then that the sweet odor had drifted through parts of the city on at least nine separate occasions since 2005.
