Creekview scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough as Sequoyah won 9-6 on Wednesday in the opening game of the Region 7AAAAA championship series.

The Lady Grizzlies responded, however, with a 10-2 win in six innings, forcing a third game today that will determine the region champion.

In other region tournament action, River Ridge knocked off Cass 4-1 in the opening round of the 7AAAA tournament Saturday.

River Ridge (18-10), the No. 1 seed of the south subregion, plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a double by Kiley Rediger. The Lady Knights then added insurance in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Darion Spencer.

On Monday, the Lady Knights fell to Northwest Whitfield (26-4) despite leading early. The 3-2 loss dropped River Ridge to the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament.

On Tuesday, River Ridge beat Dalton 8-0, and then rallied for a 6-5 victory over Ridgeland to clinch a state playoff berth for the second time in three years. The Lady Knights will face Northwest Whitfield in a rematch today, in an attempt to secure the region’s No. 2 seed behind Heritage-Catoosa.

Heather Williams pitched all seven innings of the Ridgeland game, giving up five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three.

In Region 5AAAAAA, Cherokee has positioned itself well.

The Lady Warriors won their tournament opener against Roswell 2-1, behind the solid pitching of Kendall Reeves, who struck out six in a complete game Tuesday night.

Later in the evening’s winners’ bracket play at Lassiter, Cherokee the lost to the host Lady Trojans 11-2. Lassiter scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings to secure the victory in five innings.

The loss dropped Cherokee into the losers’ bracket for Wednesday’s game, but the Lady Warriors didn’t let it get them down. They cruised by rival Etowah 9-2 to advance in the tournament, while the Lady Eagles were eliminated.

Etowah found itself in the losers’ bracket after a first-round 2-0 loss to Milton. The Lady Eagles rebounded with a 12-4 win over Walton to put themselves back in contention.

Woodstock is perhaps the biggest surprise in Region 5AAAAAA. The Lady Wolverines beat Walton 4-1, and then Milton 2-1.

They are set to play at Lassiter tonight.

Thank you for the wonderful coverage of the 2-0 Woodstock Lady Wolverines, maybe with a loss we would have gotten better coverage!
