Cherokee County School District School Psychologist Dr. John Poidevant was named the Georgia Association of School Psychologists 2013 School Psychologist of the Year.

Poidevant is a leader in his field for grief counseling and crisis response support, and is one of the first people contacted when a school needs additional support, school officials say.

“He calmly guides the administration and staff through crises and provides direct support for students and families,” Cherokee County School District Director of Special Education Charlette Green said. “He is viewed by parents and staff as professional, supportive and approachable. Dr. Poidevant is a shining example of what a school psychologist should strive to do to support students, parents and school staff.”

In addition to providing critical evaluations associated with the Special Education eligibility process, Poidevant provides a multitude of services to benefit all students in his schools. He is an active participant in Response to Intervention meetings, provides a variety of counseling support groups for students and assists with the school-wide Character Education program.

Through CCSD’s MediaCast program, he has recorded lessons for staff and students on topics such as resiliency, study skills and stress management.

Poidevant will be recognized at the Oct. 17 Cherokee County School Board meeting by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo and the school board.

Poidevant has worked as a CCSD school psychologist since 2006 and serves Avery and Macedonia elementary schools. He earned his degree in school psychology from the University of Florida.
