CANTON —The Service League of Cherokee County’s 11th annual Run for the Children 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run, rethemed as the “Reindeer Run” holiday event, is set for Dec. 7 in historic downtown Canton.
The race begins and ends at the gazebo in Cannon Park and follows a route through the historic business district and surrounding neighborhoods. The 1-Mile Fun Run will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds from the event benefit the needy children of Cherokee County.
A $1,000 cash prize provided by Cherokee Bank and Northside Pharmacy & Medical Supply will be awarded to the school in Cherokee County with the most race participants.
Any participant in the race can register as a school affiliate to help a school win the award, organizers said.
“Santa Claus himself will lead the race as runners jingle all the way through town to help others in need during this holiday season,” said Service League member and project chairwoman Stephanie Bagwell. “Santa will also be available post-race to pose for holiday photographs with race participants. Bring a toy for Toys for Tots as well if you wish.”
All pre-registered runners will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and jingle bells. Cash prizes and medals will be awarded in the 5K race to the top three overall male and female runners. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each age group. All 1-Mile Fun Run participants will receive a commemorative ribbon.
Registration through Nov. 29 for the 5K race is $25. Registration after Nov. 29 through race day is $30. Registration for the 1-Mile Fun Run is $15 through race day. Those who do not want to run but would like to contribute and receive a T-shirt can register as one of “Santa’s Helpers” prior to Nov. 29 for $15.
Race Day Registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the gazebo in Cannon Park. Pre-race package pickup will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at the gazebo.
