The city leaders of Woodstock are seeking land on which to build a third fire station. Their stated goal is to improve the quality of fire services and to maintain and improve the city’s ISO rating which impacts fire insurance rates and helps to attract new business.

Canton’s leaders seem to be taking a different road. While the city currently has property on which it can build third future fire stations, Canton is considering giving some of the land and perhaps $400,000 to the county to build a station that the county needs at Laurel Canyon/Great Sky. This station, if built, would have no impact on Canton’s ISO rating.

If the city were to build and staff this needed station, with a little extra effort, it could improve its ISO rating and lower fire insurance rates and help attract new business to Canton. But, some in the current administration have previously negated the value of the ISO rating and dismissed the probability of lowering insurance rates with an improved rating.

Instead, they are considering giving all of Canton’s fire services to the county not really to improve service but simply to transfer the responsibility of protecting the residents of Canton.

It is commendable and worth noting that Councilman Bill Grant’s company recently produced and donated a brochure to assist new businesses in working with the city. Perhaps now Councilman Grant will work to make Canton more appealing to new business. We can only hope.
