Joel Uliss, 79, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2014 at his home. Joel was born April 5, 1934 in New York City, the son of the late Nathan Uliss and Martha Cooper Uliss. Joel grew up in New Jersey, attended Clifton High School and was recruited by the Army in 1954. He served his country in Europe during the Korean War and rose to the rank of Specialist 3rd Class and received an Honorable Discharge in 1956. In 1957, Joel married his high school sweetheart Doris Ruth Wiklund. In addition to raising two sons, the late Mark E. Uliss and Michael R. Uliss, Joel followed his father’s footsteps and chose a career in the supermarket business. Joel quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became the Director of Operations for a very successful Shop Rite supermarket franchise. In 1983, Joel followed his wife, Doris Uliss to Charlotte, North Carolina and began selling cars for a living. Along with serving his customers, closing deals, and winning annual sales contests, Joel became a devoted Carolina Panther football fan. Joel is survived by wife Doris; son Michael (Celeste); daughter-in-law Betsy Uliss; sister Carol Klimboff of Wyoming, Ohio; grandsons Ryan, Tyler, and Joey and many other relatives and friends. There will be a memorial service for family and friends at Canton First United Methodist Church in Canton, Georgia at 12:00 pm Wednesday, March 12, 2014. The funeral will be held on the same day at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Joel’s name to Murphy-Harpst Life & Hope for Children. Medford-Peden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
