Every time his poll ratings slip, he gives a speech and he stems the downward trend. It is truly amazing how such a man, whose major claim to fame was that of a community organizer, but was never really vetted by the press, only adored, prior to his election could prove so resilient with so many people.
I think I may have recently found the answer to my question. During our latest winter storm that closed down much of the state, we watched an hourlong program on the local PBS station regarding the rise and fall of Adolph Hitler.
This film also showed how the rise and eventual total destruction of Germany was due to the Germans’ fanatical belief in Hitler; they loved him, and literally followed him until he had totally destroyed Germany and much of Western Europe. Hitler’s popularity, founded on pure propaganda created by Joseph Goebbels, a propagandist film maker, resulted in the death and destruction of nearly 50 million human beings, including 7 million Germans.
I was a teenager in high school when all of this death and destruction unfolded. Then, following the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan, I cheered in the streets of Caseville, Mich. As did every American as World War II, with all it gores, killing and maiming of millions of human beings had ended. World War II was supposed to end all wars — but it didn’t. Why do people continue to kill one another?
I have written on several occasions that ignorance is expensive. And ignorance of who we are as human beings, where we came from and of the purpose of life is truly expensive — so much so that the Germans stood by as their Jewish neighbors were gassed because of Hitler’s belief that they, the pure Germans, were a superior race.
I have often encouraged readers to read the biblical books of 2 Kings and Lamentations. Both of these books show how ignorance of what Jefferson referred to as “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” led to the total destruction of both Israel and Judah, and their eventual re-enslavement.
I often look for those biblical verses that I believe inspired America’s Founding Fathers as they crafted America’s Constitution. Article II of the Constitution reads “No person, except a natural born Citizen of the United States …, shall be eligible to the Office of President.” The Bible scripture that inspired these words is found in Deuteronomy 17:15 and reads “Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the Lord thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.”
Growing numbers of Americans now believe Obama is not America’s brother, but is a stranger amongst us, bringing with him the ideologies learned from his Kenyan communist father (out of his own book), those principles of socialistic thinking that is leading America down the same path Hitler led Germany during the 1930s and 1940s, to self-destruction. God, as we learn from the example of the ancient Israelites, will not be mocked.
Other appropriate biblical verses that fit modern America today are found in Judges 2:10-15 and read: “And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim: … And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. Whithersoever they went out; the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.”
Is America “distressed” today? Has God delivered America into the hands of a “spoiler?” Only time will tell.
