CANTON — The Canton Fire Department on Sunday put out a brush fire near IHOP on Highway 20, which isn’t far from Northside Hospital-Cherokee’s new site.

Fire Chief Dean Floyd said the afternoon fire spread across about half an acre but was kept at bay by a retaining wall, keeping the flames away from any buildings. The fire started at the bottom of a steep hill and worked its way toward the restaurant.

Northside Hospital-Cherokee is in the early stages of building a new hospital on a property nearby the restaurant, though Floyd wasn’t clear on whether the fire crossed onto that site.

Floyd said it was not yet known what caused the fire, but it was under investigation.
