Traditions abound as Cherokee County churches and residents prepare to mark what is considered the most significant observance of the Christian calendar.

This year will mark the 35th Easter Sunrise Worship Service at the Cherokee Memorial Park in Canton. Started by the Rev. Charles Davis and local radio personality Byron Dobbs, this year’s event will begin at 6:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Davis, who is with the Canton Community Church and helped start the event, said he chose the memorial park in south Canton because it offers a wonderful view of the sun coming up and is a beautiful spot for the service.

Davis said he always hopes and prays for a good crowd for the event. In case of rain, the service will be in the mausoleum.

The 66th annual Easter Parade started by the late Mildred Holmes of Hickory Log Church is set for 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Following the parade activities including games, an egg hunt and refreshments will be available at Hickory Log Church for those participating and watching the parade.

Those wishing to be in the parade should fill out an entry form. Entry forms may be picked up at the North Canton Fire Department. For more information contact Chief James P. Morris Sr. at (770) 479-2994 or Charles Holmes at (770) 720-7918.
