Miss Nan Alice Ponder, age 84, of Canton, GA, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the Canton Nursing Center. Nan was born on October 4, 1929, in Canton, GA, to the late William L. Ponder, Sr. and the late Mabel Young Ponder. Besides her parents, Nan was preceded in death by her brother, LTC (Ret.) William L. Ponder, Jr. She was a lifelong member of the Canton First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. After returning from Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, North Carolina, Nan worked in various positions at Canton Textile Mills, Inc., for 62 years, retiring in December 2011. She is survived by brother and sister-in-law Thomas B. Ponder and Karen Beaton of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; sister Naomi (Ponder) Alexander of LaGrange, Georgia, her sister-in-law Cathy Ponder of El Paso, Texas; Nephew Brad Ponder (Jo Miller) of Walker, Louisiana, niece Amy P. (Dave) Fralix of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, niece Christy (Keith) Golden of Dora, Alabama, and nephew David M. (Andrea) Alexander of Marietta, Georgia. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Visitation for the Ponder family will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Darby Funeral Home from 11AM until the funeral service. Funeral services are to be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at 2PM from the Chapel of Darby Funeral Home. Rev. Nathan Brandon will be officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Canton. Flowers may be accepted at this time, or donations can be made to the Georgia Alzheimer’s Association or the Cherokee County Historical Society.
