Reinhardt welcomed a familiar face back to campus July 1, as former men’s basketball coach Jeffrey Pourchier returned to take on a position as an assistant athletic director for development.

Pourchier coached at Reinhardt from 2007-12, leading the Eagles to three consecutive winning seasons and back-to-back appearances in the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship.

He departed in 2012 to take the same position at Southern Poly in Marietta, but he was left without a job after the Hornets’ athletic programs were disbanded, ahead of the university’s merger with Kennesaw State this winter.

Pourchier said the move wasn’t entirely about the termination of the Southern Poly program. His educational background supports a move into administration, which is something he has always considered doing.

In his new position at Reinhardt, Pourchier will be responsible for development and advertising. The university has never had an assistant AD in that role, and while Pourchier will report to vice president for advancement JoEllen Wilson, it does show a shift in operation at the campus.

Sports information director Jason Hanes said the goal behind adding the position was to encourage more support from the university’s alumni base.

“We want to generate more advertising revenue, but we also want to reach out to our alumni,” Hanes said. “We haven’t been doing a great job of that the last few years. We are looking to build our alumni base more through (Pourchier).”

Previously, all efforts to connect with alumni came from the university’s administrative office, and appeals weren’t made to specifically support athletics.

Hanes reiterated that Pourchier will answer to the administration and not to the athletic department.

“He works in athletics, but he doesn’t report directly to the athletic department,” Hanes said. “He reports across the campus.”

Before arriving at Reinhardt in 2002, Pourchier spent two seasons at Valdosta State as an assistant coach for the men’s basketball program. He attended LaGrange, where he was a standout on the basketball and finished his career with more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

While at LaGrange, he also earned a bachelor’s degree in business management before getting a master’s degree at Southern Poly.

With the addition of Pourchier, Reinhardt now has two assistants under athletic director Bill Popp. Glen Crawford, who also coaches the Lady Eagles’ softball, oversees compliance.
