DALLAS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a 42-year-old woman is hospitalized after she was found badly beaten on the Silver Comet Trail northwest of Atlanta.

Paulding County sheriff's officials said a bicyclist spotted the badly injured woman, who had been beaten in her head and face, lying on the side of the trail around 6:42 p.m. Tuesday. They said she was going in and out of consciousness, and was taken by helicopter to Kennestone Hospital.

Deputies say the attack happened near a bridge over Academy Drive/Vernoy Aiken Road. Investigators believe she was taken into a wooded area along the trail and left there by her attacker, and later managed to pull herself out of the woods to be discovered by the passing bicyclist.

Sheriff's officials say they're trying to determine a motive for the crime.
